Rituals have been a topic of research and discussion for a very long time, thus various models have been developed to break down rituals into core components. The Van Gennep, Victor Turner and Terrence Lovat approaches all provide a resourceful and diverse breakdown of a ritual. I have selected to utilise the Terrence Lovat method as it breaks a ritual down to its core step by step process. The Lovat technique is simple in theory, yet tremendously effective and these are the steps involved.
1. Leaves the ordinary or mundane world and enters the ritual.
2. Engages in some type of preparatory rite.
3. Experiences a central of highpoint of the ritual.
4. Joins in some form of celebration in the ritual.
5. Leaves the ritual and returns to the ordinary world.
Corresponding with other religions, rituals play an integral part in a Muslim’s (Islamic Believer) daily and spiritual life. “In the sphere of (Islamic) worship, the man of the age of electricity and space prays, fasts, and performs the pilgrimage (primary rituals of Islam) just as his ancestor from the age of the stone mill used to pray, fast and perform the pilgrimage." Another statement that conforms with the previous statement is (Muhammad, 2011) in which he said “Muslims are very action-oriented.” These two statements emphasise an integral point I made in my hypothesis-that is that rituals in Islam are imperative to the adherent.
